Global Learning Courses and Activities

Global Issues Literature LIT 3671

Throughout my time at FIU, I have taken a number of global learning courses. In fact, my global learning courses are what made me add an International Relations minor. One course in particular that made an impact on me was Global Issues Literature. I took this course my first semester at FIU, and it changed my outlook on the world. In the course, we read a series of novels that dealt with global issues. Some of the novels were very disheartening, and others were inspiring. This course was so eye-opening because I was finally being held responsible. There was no more “I didn’t know" because we were charged with the responsibility to know. My professor went to great lengths to ensure that by the end of the course we were able to articulate and cultivate ideas centered around topics such as “the other,“ and for that, I thank him. I say this because prior to moving to Miami, I lived in a less progressive and diverse city. It was easy to tell the difference between my hometown and Miami, but until the end of the course, I was not able to fully understand why but now I can. In reality, all of my global any courses at FIU have continued to open my eyes and have empowered me with knowledge; however, this course, in particular, sparked a flame that I will work never to let die out.

Global learning activities have also been extremely valuable throughout my time at FIU. One of the Study Abroad events, I met a girl who was on a similar path as me. We both wanted to help others with our degrees that we are pursuing while being able to travel. We expressed these desires to one of the representatives of the study abroad department, and she told us about the Peace Corps. We looked into it and went through the application process together. Now, we are both going to teach in Africa. If I had not gone to global learning activities, I would’ve missed out on opportunities like this. Not just opportunities to further my career but also opportunities to make friends of a lifetime.
